NEW Interview of Dakota with The Independent

Via 1 2

Part 1

Dakota Johnson has called on domestic violence protesters to research BDSM before denouncing Fifty Shades of Grey.

The US actress describes both herself and her character Anastasia Steele as feminists, despite some activists groups branding the film ‘Fifty Shades of Abuse’.

“[Ana] is a woman of incredible self-worth who goes through something really profound,” she told The Independent after the London premiere. “She goes on this insane journey and I don’t see her as a weak character or a victim at all. I wanted people to leave the cinema feeling more empowered.”

Johnson hopes that people will make informed opinions of Fifty Shades, rather than judging it with closed minds.

“I would love [critics] to see the film and maybe to do a bit more research into the psychology and the lifestyle of the BDSM sub-culture,” she said. “It’s not really about abuse, it’s about people’s taste in pleasure. Everything that Ana does in the movie is consensual, everything is her choice.”

Both Johnson and director Sam Taylor-Johnson were “very careful” to ensure that Ana was not portrayed as a victim but at the end of the day, any movie is “entertainment”.

“This isn’t a real life account,” she added. “I don’t think that we’re going around promoting domestic violence.”
The 25-year-old also shared some amusing details about the contents of the Red Room we didn’t get to see. “There were some crazy things in there, like certain chairs for certain positions” she said.

“One of them was this tiny little leather chair that looks like that thing when you go to the gynaecologist and put your feet up.”
While her co-star Jamie Dornan visited a sex dungeon to research his role as playboy billionaire Christian Grey, Johnson deliberately cut herself in the dark to make her performance more authentic.

“The thing with Ana is that she’s never seen anything like this,” she said. “I wanted it to be a genuine experience. I never saw the Red Room until the scene where you see me see it for the first time in the movie.”

Johnson admitted that Taylor-Johnson was one of the main reasons she wanted to do the movie, because she trusted her not to shoot “gratuitous” sex scenes.

“She knows how to get the emotional undertones so specific that you feel more than you think you do, instead of being like ‘Oh I’m watching a sex scene right now,” she said.

“I hope [Fifty Shades] is a vessel for women, and men, to not be ashamed of their sexualities or their bodies. Women are beautiful and people should be prouder of themselves.”

Part 2

Dakota Johnson has big plans to go from Fifty Shades to feline in her future dream role.

The US actress plays submissive student Anastasia Steele alongside Jamie Dornan in the movie adaptation of EL James’ hugely popular erotic novel, but fancies trading in the Red Room for some superhero adventures.

“I can totally be Catwoman, okay? Everyone needs to know that!” she told The Independent, giving the thumbs up to the idea of Fifty Shades’ Sam Taylor-Johnson directing.

The 25-year-old is less enamoured at the thought of taking up the Spider-Man (or woman) mantle from Andrew Garfield.

“It would be cool if someone came up with a new idea as opposed to remakes,” she said, while discussing Marvel’s recent deal with Sony Pictures that could see Spidey feature in the likes of Captain America and Thor.

As for the Fifty Shades sequels, seemingly confirmed by Taylor-Johnson last week, Johnson admits that yes, she would “love to make those”.
She shot two “completely different” movies after shooting wrapped on Fifty Shades: Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass with Johnny Depp and Bigger Splash, in which she plays “a sociopath crazy person”.

Next up is a romcom, How To Be Single, which she promises is going to be “really funny with some incredible actresses”.

“Women know what happens privately in a woman’s mind,” she said. “In the past ten, twenty years, that’s started to become more relevant in art and in movies, you get a glimpse into what a girl is like with her friends, and by herself. Men, I think, don’t really understand that.”
